Post-Operative Care Following a Simple Tooth Extraction
After any oral surgery you’ll receive detailed post-operative instructions. We’re also available to answer questions via phone or online contact form. Your recovery is our priority, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
For a simple tooth extraction, it’s crucial that a blood clot forms to stop the bleeding and begin healing. You’ll need to bite on a gauze pad for 45 minutes immediately after surgery. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. If bleeding continues after a few attempts, please call our office. Remember that saliva mixed with blood can make it look like there’s more bleeding than there is—this is normal, but don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re concerned.
Key Post-Op Instructions After a Tooth Extraction:
- Do not rinse or spit for 24 hours.
- Avoid touching the surgical area.
- Apply ice packs on the side of your face for the first 48 hours (20 minutes on, 10 minutes off).
- Take Tylenol® or ibuprofen for mild discomfort (if your doctor permits).
- Complete all prescribed antibiotics, even if you start feeling better.
- Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid straws, as suction can disrupt healing.
- Refrain from smoking for at least five days.
- Limit physical activity for 3-4 days.
- After the first day, rinse with warm salt water after meals (½ teaspoon salt in warm water) to clean the surgical area.
- Stick to soft foods and avoid hard-to-chew items like nuts, seeds, and popcorn.
Post-Operative Care for Impacted Teeth Removal
Removing impacted teeth, including wisdom teeth, is a more involved procedure. Proper post-op care can help minimize pain, swelling, and the risk of infection.
What to Expect After Surgery:
- Swelling and discomfort are normal and may peak on the second or third day.
- Temporary difficulty with opening your mouth or swallowing is common.
- Mild numbness in your tongue or lips may occur but should subside in a few hours.
- Earaches or a sore throat can sometimes develop post-surgery.
- Slight bruising or a low-grade fever for 24–48 hours is possible.
Post-Op Instructions for Impacted Teeth:
- Do not rinse or spit for 24 hours.
- Avoid touching the surgical site.
- Use ice packs on your face for 48 hours (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off).
- Take prescribed pain medications as needed.
- Drink fluids, but avoid using straws to prevent complications.
- Refrain from smoking for at least five days.
- Rest for 3–4 days and avoid strenuous activity.
- Rinse with warm salt water after meals from the second day onward.
- Stick to soft foods and avoid anything that could irritate the surgical area.
Dental Implant Post-Operative Instructions
Dental implants are a highly effective, long-term solution for tooth loss. However, the procedure requires careful post-operative care for successful healing.
Key Post-Op Guidelines:
- Avoid activities that may dislodge blood clots forming (spitting, using straws, smoking, or touching the surgical site).
- Expect some minor bleeding, but it should subside within a few hours. Keep gauze on the surgical area as directed.
- Swelling may peak in the first 24-48 hours; ice packs can help minimize discomfort.
- Follow our dietary guidelines closely, avoiding chewing on the implant site.
- Maintain oral hygiene per our instructions, using gentle brushing and flossing techniques when appropriate.
- Your dissolvable sutures will likely disappear within 4 to 10 days.
The healing process for dental implants involves osseointegration, where the implant fuses to the bone. The timeline for this can vary depending on factors like the number of implants and their stability. Once healing is complete, a dental crown will be placed, giving you a fully restored smile.
Avoiding Dry Socket
Dry socket, a painful condition caused by the dislodgement of the blood clot after an extraction, is something we help our patients avoid. Here are some tips:
- Don’t use a straw.
- Avoid smoking.
- Stick to soft foods.
- Keep your fingers away from the surgical site.
- Follow our hygiene instructions carefully.
If you have concerns about your recovery, such as early suture loss or prolonged discomfort, please contact our office immediately.
